Finance Minister Proposes to Raise Duty on Mobile Phone Priced above Rs.2000

The Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram today proposed to raise duty on mobile phones priced at more than Rs 2,000 to 6 per cent. So mobile phones that cost more than Rs 2,000 would be getting more expensive in next financial year (from April 2013).




“Mobile phones enjoy a concessional excise duty of 1 per cent and I do not propose to change that in the case of low priced mobile phones,” the Finance Minister said in its Budget presentation.About 70 per cent of imported mobile phones and about 60 per cent of domestically manufactured mobile phones are priced at Rs 2,000 or below, he added.

The Finance Minister also proposed appropriate measures for the semiconductor and electronics sector, including zero customs duty. The India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) wanted the Budget to focus on building the domestic electronics industry, which is a important item for national agenda. IESA had sought “speedy implementation” of GST and rationalised indirect tax structure of 12 per cent GST (8 per cent excise and 4 per cent VAT) on electronics manufacturing value chain.

Semiconductors are used in radio, computers and telephones, while semiconductor-based electronic components include transistors, solar cells and diodes among others.

Bigger Auction Failure: Only SSTL for CDMA Spectrum, No Taker for GSM Airwaves

It seems government’s greedy policy to earn more and more money from telecom spectrum auction hits a total roadblock, as after November-2012′s gloomy spectrum auction show, the upcoming auction to be held by March 2013 is totally rejected by GSM players.



Well I have good news too, MTS users rejoice. The parent company of MTS India, Sistema Shyam Teleservices will definitely bid for 11 circles – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, UP east, UP west, Tamilnadu & Chennai, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharastra & Goa, West Bengal & Sikkim and Gujarat – and being the sole participant in the March 2013′s auction MTS is going to bag the spectrum in all of its top priority circles.

MTS did not lost license in Rajasthan circle, and will eventually confirm its operations in another 11 circles.
Department of Telecom issued notice inviting applications for spectrum auction on 3oth January, 2013 and last date for submitting application was 22nd February, 2013. As the list of applicants was available over DoT’s website, there  is only one company – SSTL.

Interestingly GSM lobbies cried after EGoM reduced CDMA spectrum price by 50%, and Govt has plans to refarm 900MHz from incumbents- whose licenses are going to expire in 2014-15. They all demand further price cut and directly against spectrum refarming; and now it’s clear that they act smart by not buying spectrum at high price.

The production version is expected to be launched by the end of 2015, it will do-away with the B-pillar-less styling and sliding doors. No official statement has been made about the launch of MegaPixel in India.

Tata Megapixel is a new four-seater city-smart global range extended electric vehicle (REEV)  concept for the performance-seeking and environment-conscious motorist anywhere in the world. Combining a lithium ion phosphate battery and an on-board petrol engine generator for recharging on the move, the Tata Megapixel offers a range of up to 900 km (with a single tank of fuel), path-breaking CO2 emission of just 22 gm / km and fuel economy of 100 km / litre (under battery only power).The Megapixel features a built-in large touch screen at the central console. This Human Machine Interface (HMI) system allows you to connect the smart phone and control the car’s functions such as temperature, ventilation, driving modes and performance.

Features & Specifications:-The Megapixel will be powered by 4 in-wheel electric motors that deliver power of 10 kW and torque of 500 Nm as well as a range extending 325 cc single cylinder petrol engine. This fuel-powered unit will be capable of producing maximum power of 22 kW to charge the 13 kWh lithium ion phosphate battery installed in the car. Tata Motors will provide a unique wireless inductive panel for the car so that it can be charged without any cords. As drivers will only need to park the model on the charging pad to recharge it; 80 per cent recharging can be achieved in just 30 minutes.The Tata Megapixel looks funky and futuristic as well! The integrated lamp and grille graphics sweep back over the front wheel arches to render a dynamic front end. It is echoed on the panoramic roof, creating a harmony between sun & shade and sense of interior space. 

The battery layout and hub motors maximize the interior package. So, the Tata Megapixel comfortably accommodates four adults with luggage. The front seats are cantilevered on the central tunnel, releasing floor space for additional storage. Light leather trims and rose metal details accentuate the joyous marriage of richness of tradition and innovativeness of technology.This fusion is heightened by an advanced human machine interface (HMI). The console docking point can connect a smart phone with the car. The built-in large touchscreen HMI, at the centre of the instrument panel, thus becomes a common access point for the repertoire of the smart device and for controlling the functions of the car, like temperature, ventilation, driving modes and performance.

The interior features of the Megapixel will include panoramic roof, leather and rose metal trims and a Smartphone docking point. A rear projected dashboard that will be complemented by a joystick controller, similar to the BMW iDrive, will also be present in the car. ‘One Touch’ touchscreen command centre, cantilevered seating system for four adults and the innovative ‘India Global’ design theme are other features that define the interiors of the car.The floating C-pillar and wrap-around belt line finisher integrate perfectly with the sculpted body surface, flowing freely to the rear and encapsulating the 5-spoke wheel design.A double-sliding door system and the car’s B-pillar less design make entry/exit easy, besides superb visibility.

The concept version of Tata Megapixel shown at the Geneva Motor Show was slightly larger than the Nano.  Its stylish four-door body is streamlined in appearance and has aggressive body lines across the frame. A unique feature of the car will be the double sliding doors, akin to the ones seen on mini-vans, which will ensure that the passengers can get seated easily despite its small proportions.
